Actually Mum all orchid flowers have something in common . They all have 6 petals and one , generally what is veiwed as the lower one is always modified into what is called the labellum or lip in english i suppose . Orchidacea is the largest plant family in the world extending from the tropics to just below the artic circle . There are natural orchids in Britain , etc . The temperate orchids tend to be less showy then thier tropical counterparts so fewer people are aware they exist. I only mention this because being such a large family is one reason orchid flowers are so diverse. Roses on the other hand aren't a very big group (genus?) of plants . Roses are basically closely related to cactus . If you've ever seen a cactus flower , Mum , you woud see it looks just like a rose . Anyway , i hope that explanation helps but I guess the real reason orchids have such different types of flowers within the same family is because God decided he liked it that way and he made them all different . Sorry mum , if you want to read some interesting stories see if you can find some books about the early days of the orchid craze in europe and Britain . Those people were insane . Men were killed to hide certain areas in the jungles where a new species was found and it gets crazy but makes for a great read . Allan
